The Greener Homes Grant

What is it? The Greener Homes Grant is a Federal Government initiative that subsidizes efficiency upgrades for homeowners.

How much is up for grabs? A total amount of $5600 is available. How that breaks down is $5000 for the upgrades (depending on which upgrades are chosen) and a $600 for the cost of the pre and post retrofit evaluation.

Who qualifies? In order to qualify for the program you must own your home, live in it year round, and the home must be more than 6 months old.

Why bother? By choosing to make your home more energy efficient you will not only reduce your energy bills, but increase the value in your home and improve the comfort throughout your home- by reducing drafts, minimizing cold spots, and diminishing over heating to name a few.

How do I get started?

  • Start by contacting South Island Energy Solutions so we can answer any questions you may have regarding your unique project.
  • Apply for the Greener Homes Grant program here.
  • Schedule your Pre-retrofit Evaluation with us at South Island Energy Solutions.
  • Coordinate with your contractors to have your retrofit work completed. It is important to have the Pre-Eval completed prior to this step or you won’t receive any grant money.
  • Schedule your Post-retrofit Evaluation.
  • Receive your funding following the submittal of the Post-Eval.

What is a Pre & Post Retrofit Evaluation? During a Pre-Eval a Certified Energy Advisor (Me) comes to your home and documents the characteristics of it, this is required to determine how much energy the building consumes during normal operating conditions and where it looses the most energy. Based off these findings and your desired home improvement goals a list of upgrade recommendations will be provided to you. This evaluation generally takes 2-3 hours based off the size and complexity of your home.

A Post-Eval happens following your retrofit and is required to verify the improvements were indeed made. This evaluation generally takes less than an hour.
